International Student Community Service Opportunities

Office of International Service programs

The Office of International Services (OIS) provides both international and American students the opportunities to strengthen international ties and learn as a global community. The English Conversation Club, the International Friendship Program, and the Culture Corps are some of the ways OIS fosters such a community.

Non-credit Language Courses
Chinese language courses available from the Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute promotes the continued learning of the Chinese language and the Chinese culture. They offer several non-credit courses in Mandarin to accomplish this goal.

Japanese language courses available from the Japan Center

The Japan Center was created so that the relationship between North Carolina and the country of Japan could grow stronger and more beneficial. They offer several non-credit courses in the Japanese language, with particular attention paid to writing in Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

English language courses available from the Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program is a non-credit course designed to significantly improve the English skills of non-native speakers. The program even offers supplemental courses in proper pronunciation and in American culture.

Service Learning Opportunities (CSLEPS)
Alternative Service Break

The Center for Student Leadership, Ethics, and Public Service (CSLEPS) offers "alternative" spring and winter breaks every year. Instead of a traditional vacation, these trips get students working on community service projects in places like the Dominican Republic.

Peace Corps
The Peace Corps at NC State

The Peace Corps is a long respected program that promotes peace and friendship throughout the world. Students are sent to various countries in need and, through their service, create a greater global community.

Regional Advisory Groups

Information on the Faculty Advisory Groups that work directly with the Office of International Affairs to provide important expertise and counsel to assist the Office of International Affairs in identifying institutions with which to initiate or expand sustainable collaborative relationships.

NC Japan Center

The NC Japan Center serves as a focal point for interaction between Japan and North Carolina, and is a statewide resource intended to assist all citizens, universities, companies, and public and private institutions in relations with the Japanese.

Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute’s mission is to enhance intercultural understanding in the U.S. by sponsoring Chinese language and culture programs. NC State’s Confucius Institute promotes this mission through a range of educational and outreach activities for students, teachers, businesses, and community members. The institute contributes to the expansion of Chinese language instruction at NC State and in North Carolina public schools, enriches cultural opportunities and helps North Carolina businesses understand and compete on a global scale. 


Economic Outreach & Development

The NC State University Extension, Engagement and Economic Development Office partners the resources of the university and the local community to produce mutual benefits.They develop the best strategies to attain these benefits.

Global Training Initiative Summer Language and Culture Camps

The Global Training Initative and the Confucius Institute have partnered together to provide a week long summer camp for children interested in Chinese. The camp will offer instrutruction in both the language and the culture, as well as time for students to learn traditional Chinese games, sports, and cooking techniques.
