Beginning Chinese for Adults (I) 

Mondays and Thursdays, August 27 - December 6, 2012 (15 weeks / 27 sessions)

7:00pm – 8:30pm No classes on Sept.3, Oct.4, Nov.22

Location: NC State Centennial Campus, Engineering Builiding 2, Room 1226

Registration Fee: $180

An ideal course for adults without any Chinese language background, you will learn basic Mandarin phonetic system (Pinyin), and will practice frequently used Chinese expressions and every-day words. Oral and listening skills will be emphasized and basic Chinese grammar and character writing system will also be introduced.

 

Beginning Chinese for Adults (II) 

Mondays and Thursdays, August 27 - December 6, 2012 (15 weeks / 27 sessions)

This course is designed for those who have completed Beginning Chinese (I), or the equivalent, have learned the Pinyin system, and have grasped a couple hundred spoken Chinese words. This course will help students to improve their Chinese so that they can use the language to communicate information related to their daily life.

 

Beginning Chinese for Adults (III) 

Mondays and Thursdays, August 27 - December 6, 2012 (15 weeks / 27 sessions)

Designed for those who have completed Beginning Chinese (II) or the equivalent, have learned the Pinyin system, and have grasped a few hundred spoken and written Chinese words, this course will help you improve spoken language, understand more complex topics related to everyday situations, and will increase character recognition. Extra support and guidance will be offered to those who would like to improve Chinese character reading and writing skills.

 

Intermediate Chinese

Designed for those who have completed Beginning Chinese for Adults (III) or the equivalent, have grasped several hundred Chinese words, and can communicate basic ideas in Chinese. This course will help you to be more fluent in spoken language, increase Chinese character recognition and learn more grammar to be able to construct sentences.

 

Chinese Characters (Hanzi)

Wednesdays, September 12, 26; October 10, 24; November 7, 28, 2012 (6 sessions)

For a language without an alphabet, ever wondered how Chinese characters (Hanzi) came about? This course is designed for those who have interests in learning Chinese characters (Hanzi). As opposed to mainly focusing on verbal communication, this course will introduce Chinese characters (Hanzi) to promote better understanding of the deeper meaning of the Chinese language.

 

Chinese Tea, Culture, and Customs

Tuesdays, October 16 & November 13, 2012 (2 sessions)

China is the home country of tea. Chinese tea-like Chinese silk and china-has become synonymous worldwide with refined culture. A Chinese tea cup may look small, but it holds a great deal more than tea and water. As you listen to our tea experts, you might believe you are sipping the distillation of thousands of years of Chinese culture. You will learn about tea and the intricate rituals involved in drinking it. Through this class, you will be introduced to many varieties of tea, its proper preparation and tea-drinking etiquette. You will see for yourself why the ancient saying holds true, “Life is like tea. The longer it steeps, the richer it becomes.”

 

Chinese Food

Tuesday, November 27 & Thursday, November 29, 2012 (2 sessions)

6:30pm – 8:30pm 

Location: 1st session - A&C Supermarket, 3210 South Wilmington Street  Raleigh, NC 27603

                2nd session - NC State Schaub Hall Room 211, 400 Dan Allen Drive, Raleigh, NC

Minimum Enrollment: 10

If you are interested in learning more about Chinese food and how to prepare basic, authentic dishes then this course is ideal for you. The first session will be held at a local Chinese market where the instructor will introduce Chinese food and dining as it relates to culture, tradition, environment, health, and history. You will also learn about the various Chinese fruits, vegetables, and meats that are available and about the basic ingredients that are used in many dishes.

The second session will be located in a commercial kitchen at NC State University, where you’ll observe Chinese cooking methods and will participate in preparing famous Chinese dishes typically eaten during holidays and other special occasions. Bring your appetite!
