Meet the IEP Staff
Jeong Powell, Director
Ms. Jeong Powell has joint appointments between the Office of International Affairs (OIA) and the Enrollment Management Services (EMAS). Within the OIA, Jeong developed the Intensive English Program (IEP) at NC State with a goal of increasing international student enrollment and serves as the Director of the IEP. As the Director, she is responsible for the operations of the IEP including budgeting, coordinating, and supervising program instructions and activities. Jeong also oversees international student recruitment efforts for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as part of EMAS by serving as Assistant Director for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
Prior to working at NC State, she worked for International Special Programs at Portland State University and served as the Director of International Student Services at Florida State College at Jacksonville where she developed the English Language Institute for international students. The English Language Institute was part of the College's strategic plan to increase international enrollment in degree programs and to internationalize the campus.
She received a B.A. in French and English from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, South Korea, and an M.A. in Conflict Resolution with a focus on International and Intercultural Conflict Resolution from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon, with additional study at Canada's Brock University in St. Catharines and at France’s Université de Poitiers in Poitiers, working on a maîtrise in English. She enjoys traveling and making new friends.
Cate Madden, Assistant Director
Cate Madden serves the Intensive English Program as assistant director and is a proud member of the NC State Wolfpack. She has worked in the field of ESL as a teacher and program administrator for more than 25 years. Ms. Madden holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and culture from the University of Virginia, and a master’s degree in education (TESOL) from Boston University. Before moving to North Carolina, Ms. Madden worked with the English & Certificates Program for Internationals at the University of California-Irvine as the director of academic affairs. Once in North Carolina, Ms. Madden held the position of ESL Coordinator for the Durham Public Schools and later served as an ESL program coordinator for Wake Tech’s Basic Skills Program. In the classroom, she has had the privilege of teaching all aspects of English language learning to all types of language learners from bilingual elementary children and university bound students to Business English for executives. One of her most interesting experiences was being selected to tutor the Chinese actor, Jet Li.
Katy Bishop, Program Coordinator
Katy Bishop, program coordinator for the Intensive English Program, grew up in Austin, TX and moved to North Carolina in 1996. She completed her bachelor’s degree at North Carolina State University in 2005. She then lived in Santander, Spain for several years and worked as an English teacher for the Ministry of Education. She returned to NC State to pursue her master’s degree in international studies, with a specialization in higher education administration. Katy worked as the IEP graduate assistant during these years until she completed her master’s in 2012 and became the program coordinator. As a long-time supporter of the Wolfpack, Katy loves NC State and enjoys sharing what Raleigh has to offer the IEP students. She always has a good restaurant recommendation if you need one!
Jennifer Brown, Program Assistant / Tutor
Jennifer Brown is the program assistant/tutor for the Intensive English Program. She was raised in Lynchburg, Virginia and moved to Raleigh, NC in 1996 to pursue her bachelor’s degree at North Carolina State University. In 2004, Jennifer moved to Spain and earned an advanced Spanish as a Second Language bilingual diploma from the University of Salamanca. She worked as a translator/interpreter in Santander, Spain for various international companies as well as the Cantabrian court system. In 2005, after becoming TESOL/TEFL certified, Jennifer began her exciting and diverse teaching career. During her six years in Spain, she taught and/or tutored world-renowned research physicians, business executives and professional athletes, as well as various members of the Ballet Nacional de Madrid.
Jess Pulliam, Graduate Intern
Jess Pulliam is the graduate intern for the Intensive English Program for the Spring 2013 Semester. Jessica is originally from Rocky Mount, which is only about 45 minutes east of Raleigh. In May of 2012, she received a dual bachelor's degree from East Carolina University. There she double majored in History and Hispanic Studies and earned a certificate in Global Understanding With Distinction. During her undergraduate career she worked as a volunteer ESL tutor in the Pitt County School System. She also spent the summer of 2011 living and studying Spanish in Granada, Spain. Jessica is currently a graduate student at N.C. State pursuing her Master of Arts degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Jessica is also a tutor for the Academic English Program at N.C. State, which serves the tutoring needs of IEP students after they have matriculated into the University as undergraduate students.
