Strategic Collaboration Program

Between NC State University and the University of Pretoria

The partnership between NC State and the University of Pretoria has emerged over many years as collaborations and joint projects between our universities have expanded, with the University of Pretoria now having a strategic hub in eastern North America, and NC State having the same in southern Africa. Our universities are well-aligned across disciplines in all areas of teaching, research, and outreach as PhD/DVM level degree-granting institutions. Both institutions enjoy high rankings and can foster and facilitate academic collaborations of nearly every kind, which can serve as an efficient gateway into each others' geographic regions.

In 2010, both institutions committed to an inter-institutional seed grant program designed to enhance research and programmatic collaborations. The first round of grants resulted in four successful proposals enhancing partnerships between the two institutions (see final reports from the successful proposals here).

NC State and the University of Pretoria have committed to a second round of funding, with some support going to expanding/continuing ongoing projects and some support dedicated to new proposals.  The latest funded projects are:

Title:  Unraveling complex relationships between beetles, fungi and trees

Principal Investigators:  Dr. William Dvorak (NCSU) & Dr. Jeff Garnas (UP)

Interim Report, May 2013

Title:  Integrated assessment of South African watershed bacterial communities critical to human health and welfare

Principal Investigators:  Dr. Slavko Komarnytsky (NCSU) & Dr. Stephanus N. Venter (UP)

Interim Report, May 2013

Title:  International Mentoring of Advanced Graduates for INterdisciplinary Excellence (IMAGINE)

Principal Investigators:  Dr. Melissa McHale (NCSU) & Dr. Liesel Ebersohn (UP)

Interim Report, May 2013
